Koder House

The Koders moved to Cochin from Iraq a few centuries ago. Samuel Koder, who ran the Cochin Electric Company, built this stunning three-storeyed building, intended for his three sons. Only Satu Koder, one of his sons, and his wife Gladys, lived here. Satu was the Pardesi Synagogue’s warden for 40 years. It is now taken care of by his son-in-law, Sammy Hallegua. Hallegua’s wife and daughter of Satu, Queenie, sold the house to its present owners.

The Koder House was reconstructed over an early nineteenth century Portuguese mansion. It is believed to have been structured and gabled in Europe and shipped to Cochin. Its windows are said to be made of imported Belgium glass.

The Koders owned many shops across Kerala. They also dealt in luxury goods: alcoholic beverages, clothes and chandeliers, to name a few. Samuel Koder was the honorary consul to the Netherlands, and so Dutch ambassadors were frequent visitors to the house. Koder also began the Freemasons’ organisation in Cochin.

This heritage boutique hotel has five Deluxe suites and one Junior luxury suite. It comes with a bedroom, sitting room, and the bathrooms have Jacuzzi. A Personal valet is available for each room. Four of the suites also have a balcony overlooking the Chinese fishing nets and the park near the Fort Kochi Beach.

Menorah, the multi cuisine restaurant that overlooks a plunge pool is the only restaurant in India that serves Cochin-Jewish food. They also specialize in Kerala seafood delicacies. There’s a 1,000-sq.ft, teak-floored Wine and Beer lounge. The Serena Wellness Spa offers splendid rejuvenation to the guests. You can also make use of their library, business centre, foreign exchange, electronic safe, Internet, doctor-on-call and laundry services.

Koder House is luxury and tradition coming to life. Visit this historic heritage hotel for a real taste of Fort Kochi’s glorious past. The enchanting past of the Koder House blends with the modern ‘today’ of the city!
