While in Fort Cochin, you cannot miss this 180-year-old bungalow! The building has been influenced by Portuguese, Dutch and British architecture. It is only walkable distance from the Fort Kochi beach and attractions such as the St Francis Church, the Dutch Cemetery, Portuguese Museum, Chinese Fishing Nets and the Santa Cruz Basilica. Most of the rooms have been retained in their old glory. Wooden ceilings and flooring still bear resonance to the ancient life which saw this structure through the ages. The Napier Suite is the largest of the lot, quite decked up in its antique style. The Napier Deluxe, too, is lavish and grand. Both come with private balconies. The budget Napier Standard rooms are done up well. They are more modern-looking and swanky.

You can be assured of utter luxury when you’re here. Pamper yourself with Ayurvedic massages, go for a swim or laze around on the veranda. The hotel will take care of airport transfers, currency exchange, cultural tours, sightseeing and wellness solutions for you. When you go shopping, do let us know; we’ll get you good discounts at selected stores. If you’re interested in yoga and meditation, we can arrange classes for you. The same with cooking classes. Backwater tours are a great option if you’ve a day to spare. Watch life in the villages go by as your houseboat cruises down the lagoon.

Napier House’s multi-cuisine restaurant specialises in Nadan cuisine (traditional local food). The homely food is too good to let by. There’s an open kitchen, too, for those who want to experiment! Make your own dishes or but fresh fish from the nearby market and order our cook to serve it up according to your tastes.

Napier House is easily reachable by road. Instead, you can take the ferry from Ernakulam Jetty as well.

World Tourism Day was observed across India with much pomp. God’s Own Country – Kerala – also did! Fort Cochin’s Chinese Fishing Nets, believed to have first set up by Chinese traders, are famous all over the world. Tourists and locals alike visit this part of Ernakulam district every day. On this year’s special day, the District Tourism Promotion Council conducted many seminars, exhibitions and campaigns as part of the celebrations. Photographs and artifacts adorned the exhibitions.

As part of the upcoming District project to conserve the nets, a seminar on ‘Conservation of the Chinese Fishing Nets of Fort Kochi’ was also held. The nets will be mechanised and metal parts repaired and replaced. New ones will also be set up along the shores.
It is not enough to just set the nets up or clean the premises, the beach and the nearby areas need a facelift. Welfare of the fishermen and fishing net workers will be taken care of and the Fort Cochin Heritage Zone cleaned well. Live open air dance, theatre and art performances will enliven the evenings in the beach area – tourists will be able to learn about the culture and heritage of Fort Cochin and surrounding towns.

Another idea is to start a guided walking tour from Fort Cochin to Vypeen along the coast – this will definitely give tourists an idea about the lifestyle of fishermen and locals around the shore areas. The DTPC plans to have a deep-sea-fishing tour to be organized in trawlers.

Spices trade with the East has always been a subject of European history and politics. Kerala was at the crux of it. It still is. Pepper exports from the country are at its highest from Kerala. The Jews and the Romans were the first Europeans/ West Asians to reach India. Pepper was a major trade item – gold was given in exchange for it. The Arabs reigned over the spices trade in the early pre-Christian era, and they also took incense and oils from the East, by land as well as through the Persian Gulf.

Somewhere around 116 B.C., a Greek sailor set sail to the East in search of the source of this black gold. He reached India’s southwest coast successfully. This led to the establishment of Greek and Roman spice trade in the following years. They are the ones who named it pepper: in Latin, it is “peperi”.

By 3 A.D., the Romans lost their position as the top traders. Then came the Arabs, who regained their hold in the trade. Venice started overtaking the Arabs, and the competition between the two led to the huge rise of pepper price. Western Europe was in the search for an alternative. In the mid and later 15th century, Portugal revived the thirst for the search for the Eastern spices. With stronger ships and avid travllers and explorers, Vasco da Gama set foot on Indian soil, by reaching Calicut in northern Kerala in 1498 A.D. The Portuguese now dominated the very rewarding spices trade.

Years later the Dutch entered the scene. In 1663 A.D., they defeated the Portuguese and took over the spices trade from their hands. And, almost 200 years after their successful reign, the British took over the power in India. Even now you can see spices shops lining bazaars and areas in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry in Cochin. On a walk, you can visit them and buy spices.

Right next to the Parade Ground in Fort Kochi, facing an open space and sprawling into the streets is David Hall, one section of a
three-part 300-year-old Dutch bungalow. It is an art gallery and a café, both rolled into one. The white-washed building was once home to Dutch commander Hendrik Adriaan Van Reede Tot Drakestein who is best known for his ‘Hortus Malabaricus’, a book on the flora of Malabar Coast. It is currently named after David Koder, a Jewish merchant, though. Recently, the gallery held the Exhibition of Eco Products and Solutions. This was a venture of the CGH Earth group of hotels as part of its environment week celebrations. And what could one find here? Bags made of water hyacinth leaves, eco-friendly plastic toys and artifacts recycled from old plastic bottles, wool bracelets, tribal art paintings and photographs by various artistes.

Kodungalloor-based Kottapuram Integrated Development Society (KIDS), the organization that sold bags and tablemats from water hyacinth, also had products made from natural fibres such as banana, palm leaf, screwpine, paddy straw and jute. A star attraction was the Oyster Festival, held by CGH Earth along with the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and the Kudumbasree. The visitors could watch and learn about oysters in seawater and how they are processed.

The ‘thorthu’, a thin, wafery native version of a towel, was sold by Kara. These are much in demand abroad – quite useful as they dry faster than the thicker ones. The CGH had set up a miniature paper recycling unit. Here, old newspapers were recycled – the paper is first shredded, and then mixed with natural fibrous materials like pineapple stalk. The manually-operated press is fed with the pulp. Later, it is dried and made into sheets of paper. At Spice Village, a CGH resort, there’s a full-time press where women recycle paper. The entire hotel’s stationery is made up of this recycled paper.

Emmanuelle Faussart Odye is a French artist settled in Kochi, and a follower of the recycling art movement. She displayed recycled plastic toys at the event – a neat spaceship whose parts were a Harpic bottle, hairbrush comb and bottle caps. She doesn’t even glue as it is a chemical. Instead, the toys are held in place by used bottle things and knick-knacks.

What most people stopped at was EarthCafe – not another exhibition of art, rather the art of good food, if you wanna call it that. Fresh seafood was served in varieties of flavours and smells. Oysters were the specialty. You could also pick up a plate of prawns, stir-fried seafood, sardine kebabs and others.

Such festivals add colour to the gallery. People who visit the place can learn about Dutch architecture and culture, too.
